Frank Chimero AIGA Colorado Event Poster

To help promote the talk/presentation Frank Chimero was giving to the Colorado Chapter of AIGA April 27th, 2011, I designed this poster.

I wanted the poster to reflect Frank's style and personality, but not be a carbon copy of any of his work. He is a Portland based designer, illustrator, and soon-to-be-author; much of his work has vintage mid-century themes, and is typically illustrative.  His color palette usually includes muted tones from bright warms to soft cool colors. I used an antique illustration of the city grid of Portland in the portrait of Frank to reflect the city and environment which surrounds his day to day life and perhaps informs his thoughts and creativity on some level. I also layered the illustration to give it a paper cut/assemblage/DIY kind of feel to relate to some of the more experimental and artistic aspects of his work.

Many of Frank's talks and ideas stray into the philosophical aspects of the design industry, and much of what he gives presentations on are thoughtful and reflective. I wanted his portrait to possess these themes so rather than a literal interpretation of his portrait, it is more of a vague nod to various aspects of his physical appearance, such as his glasses, the flip in his hair, and the reflective gaze into the distance.

I found out recently this poster has made its way into the AIGA National States Poster Collection in New York City!
